ENERGY SAVING TIPS
Why Should We Save Energy?
India's economic growth is pegged at 7.4% for 1997-2012 and to achieve this developmental objective the country needs more energy whose consumption levels are considered a direct indicator of the nation's development. To achieve this a corresponding growth in commercial energy supplies is a must. And most o f this comes from fossils fuels and electricity.
India's proven coal reserve will last for about 200 years and reserves of oil and natural gas are expected to run out in about another 2- to 30 years respectively. In the light of this energy conservation assumes crucial significance in order to power India's development which ranks 5th in the world in terms of energy consumption.
In India the household and commercial sectors account ofr a large share of peak power demand. Indian power system suffer nearly 10-12 % peaking shortage for an hour every evening. Both sectors experience sudden addition to the lighting loads in the evening which causes power shortage. to meet this loads, this short duration shortage, requires construction of extra capacity of generation, transmission, as well as distribution, infrastructure, chich is a costly affair and not in the individual capacity. so as an individual, we can help this by saving energy at our level.
- One of the best energy-savings devices is the light switch. Turn off lights when not required.
- Many automatic devices can help in saving energy used in lighting. Consider employing infrared sensors, motion sensors, automatic timers, dimmers and solar cells wherever applicable, to switch on/off lighting circuits.
- AS far as possible use task lighting, which focuses light where its needs. A reading lamp, for e.g. lights only reading material rather than the whole room.
- Dirty tube lights and bulbs reflect less light and can absorb 50% of the light; clean your tube lights and lamps regularly
- Florescent tuber lights and CFLs convert electricity to visible light up to 5 times more efficiently than ordinary bulbs and thus save about 70% of the electricity for the same lighting levels. An electronic choke can save up to 30% energy as compared to electro magnetic chokes.
- 90% of the energy consumed by an ordinary bulb (incandescent lamp) is given off as heat rather than visible light.
- Replace your electricity guzzling ordinary bulbs (incandescent lamps) with more efficient types. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) use up to 75% less electricity than incandescent lamps.
- A 15-watt CFL bulb produces the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb
- Use ceiling or table fan as first line of defense against summer heat. Ceiling fans, for instance, cost about 30 paisa an hour to operate- much less than air conditioners (Rs. 10 per hour)
- You can reduce air-conditioning energy use by as much as 40% by shading your home's windows and walls. Plant trees and shrubs to keep the day's hottest sun off your house.
- One will use 3 to 5% less energy for each degree air conditioner is set above 22C (71.5 o F), so set the thermostat of room air conditioner at 25 o C (77 o F) to provide the most comfort at the least cost.
- Using ceiling or room fans allows you to set the thermostat higher because the sir movement will cool the room.
- A good conditioner will cool and dehumidify a room in about 30 min, so use a timer and leave the unit off for sometimes.
- Keep doors to air-conditioned rooms closed as often as possible.
- Clean the air-conditioner filter every month. A dirty air filter reduces airflow and may damage the unit. Clean filters enable the unit to cool down quickly and use less energy.
- If room air conditioner is older and needs repair, it's likely to be very inefficient. It may work out cheaper on lifecycle costing to buy a new energy-efficient air conditioner.
- Make sure that refrigerator is kept away from all sources of heat, including direct sunlight, radiators and appliances such as the oven, and cooking range.
- When it's dark, place a lit flashlight inside the refrigerator and close the door. If light around the door is seen, the seals need to be replaced.
- Refrigerator motors and compressors generate heat, so allow enough space for continuous airflow around refrigerator. If the heat can't escape, the refrigerators cooling system will work harder and use more energy.
- A full refrigerator is a fine thing, but be sure to allow adequate air circulation inside.
- BY replacing INCANDESCENT (GLS) by COMPACT FLUROSCENT LAMPS (CFLs) you can bring the consumption down by three-fourth of the original The widespread use of GLS lamps by households and commercial users is a major area of potential efficiency gain in lighting. For e.g. to get the same light output, one 60 W GLS bulbs be replaced by a 15 W CFLs this reduce the power demand by nearly 45 W or three fourth of the original
- Green Corridor
A green building is a structure that focuses on health, environment and resource conversation. Green buildings reduce human exposure to toxic material; help conserve non-renewable energy and recycle waste including sewage water. The design minimizes ecological impact of energy and materials used
- Making optimum use of natural light
- Use of plumbing installations which use less water
- Energy-efficient equipment for air-conditioning and lighting systems
- Use of building material which has a high recycled content
- Maintaining indoor environment quality to avoid sick building syndrome
- Use of safe paints, sealants and adhesives
- Such types have already started in BKC (bandra-kurla complex) with 3 buildings of Wockhardt, SEBI, and Bank of India.
