VATSALYA

Vatsalya Trust, Mumbai was born on 8th February 1983. The founders were Smt. Sanjivani Raykar, Late Dr. Shivram Athavale, Shri. G.A Damle and few others who felt a need for starting a charitable organization dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of destitute children.
Vatsalya' Name emerged from a Sanskrit word meaning affection and was considered appropriate for naming the proposed Charitable Trust.

After overcoming some initial obstacles an orphanage was started at Kanjur with 2 infant girls on 2nd June 1985. It was not a cakewalk. Nurturing, and rehabilitating infants involved several aspects: legal, medical, social and emotional. The number of infants started growing steadily but Vatsalya Trust had to deal with space and infrastructure constraints. Financial resources were also limited. Vatsalya undoubtedly kept working on all these fronts. Now, after 20 years of existence, Vatsalya’s social activities have taken deep roots in the society and the Trust stands on sound footing today

Vatsalya has a 3-tier structure, which includes:

Board of Trustees This Board comprises of prominent professionals and experienced social workers, who make policy decisions and are responsible for the important financial and organizational matters.

PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF VATSALYA TRUST

CHILD CARE AND REHABILITATION CENTER -ADOPTION CELL

Until 15th Jan2006, 1001 destitute children have been provided love and warmth at the Center. At any given time there are about 60 children in the Child Care Center. The Centre has moved to its new building at Kanjur in September 2003. It can now comfortably accommodate 100 children

Vatsalya Trust believes in rehabilitation of children by way of in-country adoption. Only the special needs children who cannot get placed within the country are proposed for inter -country adoption so that they are not deprived of parental love. So far, 5 such special need children have been placed with NRI families in inter-country adoption, & while 822 children have been placed in adoption within the country. Currently there are about 45 children

How does the Organisations get the children? (Sources of the childrens in vatsalya )

The children arrive at vatsalya through 2 main sources, like unwed mother and second through police getting destitute babies in public place.
When child is found in the public place , police take the custody and place the child to such orphanage
When the child arrived here the trust or the organizations do all the medical check up take care of the child for few days until the child with the trust representative and the police is presented in front of the “CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE”
After all the investigations done by the side of police, the committee declares the child as “destitute and legally free” and then hand over the responsibility of the child rehabilitation to the Trust
Only a Legally Free Child is allowed to be adopted

Who are eligible to adopt a child?

Legally a couple or a single person who are financially in a position to take care of a child can adopt a child.

How does the health and hygiene of a child taken care?

Children are feeded branded milk powder and other child food.
There is check up which take place twice in a week, and the child who are just few days or months old are taken special care only 2 to 3 care taker are allowed to go in the room where such children a kept, because these children are very much prone to infection so only selected care takers are allowed to go.
Any emergience regarding the health of a child, they are taken to ANKUR HOSPITAL which is just 5min away from Vatsalya,

How can a Parent adopt a child?

They need to take an appointment and register them selves with the trust.
Whole process of Adoption takes few months as there is lot of mental, social and the legal process.
When a couple desires to adopt there is a counseling session of the couple taken by the professionals individually as well as together.
Periodically pre & post adoption counseling sessions for the adoptive parents are organized by Vatsalya Trust.
There financial position ,there family background is properly investigated and then only the trust agrees to give them for adoption , as they need to be sure that the family can take the responsibility of the child and give them enough love and care.
There are lots of legal formalities which are to be done before the parents can take the child with them.
All the legal formalities are done by Vatsalya itself. And then there is a Farwell ceremony done for the child on behalf of the institute, In this Farwell ceremony all the family members of the parents who are adopting the child comes together , and with all the traditions the child is handed over to the parent.

What happen after the child is been adopted by the parents?

After the child is given for adoption to track the children’s current situation Vatsalya has initiated and supported an emotional support group of adoptive parents called Spandan? Here all the the parents who has adopted the child form Vatsalya forms a group called spandhan and do the follow up by visiting the parents who has newly adopted the child.

What if a Parent form outside country wants to adopt a child from vatsalya?

As per the Legal rules an Adoption center has to give first preference to the Area in the jurisdiction for accepting an adoptive parent desire.
In order to facilitate the implementation of the norms, principles and procedures relating to adoption of children laid down by the Supreme Court, several steps have been taken by the Government of India. Setting up of Central Adoption & Resource Agency (CARA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Women & Child Development is one such step. CARA deals with all matters concerning in-country adoption and regulates inter-country adoption.
SO if a parent from outside country wants to adopt they have to contact the Indian government recognized agencies with in that country and hence the application to vatsalya will come through the CARA
The Agencies in different country has a responsibility that they do all the necessary investigation about the desirous parent. And give the report to the CARA.

What about the children who are not adopted ?

Those children are placed in an Ashram where there education is taken care off and the child is set to lead a life by taking up a good career.
If the Child is a girl they are sent to BALIKASHRAM which is at sanpada and is a project of the VATSALAYA TRUST.
